Scholarship as Conversation

Scholarship as Conversation

The Big Questions:

  • What other perspectives exist beyond any given piece of scholarly work?

  • At what level of scholarly conversation can I currently contribute?

  • How has the scholarly conversation led us to this point in time? What seminal works contributed to the conversation?

  • Where do scholarly conversations in my field take place? What are barriers to joining these conversations?

Understandings:

  • Works identified as scholarly must continue to be evaluated as ideas are debated over time.

  • It is important to seek out varying perspectives as there is rarely a “right” answer.

  • Lack of fluency in the language of the field can be a barrier to conversations.

  • Citation both facilitates and gives legitimacy to one’s participation in the scholarly conversation.

Student Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to...

  • access the information they need.
  • explain peer review.
  • evaluate information and its sources critically.
  • use information ethically and legally.
  • analyze barriers to participation in scholarly conversation.
